AI Demand Shifts Over 50% of Samsung 4nm Fabs to HBM4

Samsung Electronics is significantly realigning and expanding its 4nm foundry capacity to meet the skyrocketing demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Rising requirements for HBM4 base dies have recently pushed the company's existing 4nm manufacturing capacity to full utilization. This massive shift in production focus highlights how critical AI computing infrastructure has become to the broader semiconductor supply chain, compelling major foundries to rapidly adjust their long-term manufacturing footprints.

The integration of advanced foundry processes into memory production represents a major technological evolution in the sector. Samsung's next-generation HBM4E solutions utilize a base die fabricated entirely on the company's cutting-edge 4nm process technology. This advanced node enables speeds of up to 14 gigabits-per-second per pin and bandwidth exceeding 4 terabytes-per-second, addressing the massive data bottlenecks inherent in large language models. By utilizing its integrated device manufacturer (IDM) capabilities, Samsung can directly link its advanced logic nodes with next-generation 3D memory packaging.

To accommodate this surge and maximize profitability, Samsung is strategically restructuring its product mix. The tech giant is offloading standard DRAM, SSD, and DDR5 memory module production to outside partners to free up space for high-margin AI memory components. This aggressive pivot comes after utilization rates at critical 4nm and 5nm nodes previously dipped below 50% in 2025, before tightening demand for AI custom processors pushed overall utilization back to the 70%–80% range. The reallocation ensures that limited in-house capacity is dedicated strictly to the most lucrative segments of the AI hardware market.

Moving forward, this capacity realignment is expected to significantly improve the financial health of Samsung's foundry operations. Market analysts project that surging HBM4 base die orders and high-value AI custom accelerator agreements will help narrow Samsung's foundry losses by nearly 42% in 2026. Furthermore, with global foundry revenues projected to reach $218.8 billion as AI GPUs drive sub-5nm demand, Samsung's capacity shifting strategy secures its vital position in the next wave of hyperscale datacenter expansion.
