Ams OSRAM takes an automotive-qualified force sensor into robotic hands.

ams OSRAM is expanding the application of its robust optical force sensing technology from automotive human-machine interfaces to advanced robotics. Leveraging automotive-grade components, such as AEC-Q102 qualified infrared emitters, the company is enabling a new generation of tactile sensing for robotic hands. This strategic crossover brings highly reliable and durable force measurement capabilities to industrial and consumer robotics, where precision and resilience to harsh environments are critical.

The core of this tactile technology relies on a sophisticated optical mechanism rather than traditional mechanical or capacitive switches. An optical force sensing system utilizes a side-by-side light emitter and photodetector positioned beneath a flexible, reflective surface. When an external force is applied, the surface deflects, changing the amount of light reflected back into the sensor, which allows the system to calculate the exact force applied with extreme precision.

In the context of robotic hands, this optical approach solves fundamental challenges in tactile feedback and object manipulation. Because the sensors can be hidden behind a continuous surface, they are inherently dirt-resistant, waterproof, and immune to the mechanical wear or localized discoloration that plagues conventional physical sensors. This allows robotic end-effectors to maintain a precise, consistent grip force over a long operational lifespan, which is essential for handling delicate items in manufacturing or assisting in dynamic environments.

By repurposing its automotive-ready optical sensing portfolio for robotic applications, ams OSRAM is facilitating more intelligent and multimodal control systems. These fully integrated components offer a cost-efficient implementation directly within a robot's existing housing without requiring complex, multi-material assemblies. Ultimately, integrating these compact optical force sensors equips robotic platforms with the reliable, context-sensitive tactile awareness necessary to operate safely and effectively.
