Broadcom Jointly Launches Custom AI Chip with OpenAI; AI Semiconductor Business Continues Strong Growth.

Broadcom and OpenAI have jointly introduced Jalapeño, a new custom artificial intelligence chip designed specifically for large language model (LLM) inference. Developed from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in an unprecedented nine months, this custom AI accelerator aims to improve performance, efficiency, and scale across AI systems. The chip is built around OpenAI's deep understanding of LLM fundamentals and is designed to support the ChatGPT maker's current and future AI models. Initial deployment of the Jalapeño processor is expected by the end of 2026, marking a significant step in OpenAI's strategy to build a full-stack advantage in AI hardware and infrastructure.

The launch of this custom processor aligns with Broadcom's explosive financial growth, largely driven by its AI semiconductor business. During the first quarter of fiscal 2026, Broadcom's AI revenue grew 106% year-over-year to $8.4 billion, which accelerated further in the second quarter to $10.8 billion, representing a 143% year-over-year increase. The company has provided guidance indicating that its AI semiconductor revenue growth is expected to exceed 200% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2026. Overall, in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, the company reported a revenue surge to $18.01 billion, heavily supported by a 74% year-over-year increase in AI semiconductor revenue.

Broadcom's success is heavily anchored in its ability to secure massive custom AI chip agreements with major technology companies. In addition to OpenAI, the company co-develops custom processors with Alphabet and recently secured massive orders, including a $10 billion order and a subsequent $11 billion order to deliver TPU Ironwood racks to Anthropic by late 2026. Broadcom's CEO Hock Tan has emphasized that the collaboration with OpenAI is just the beginning of a multi-generation compute platform roadmap. Market analysts from Mizuho Securities now project that Broadcom's AI-related revenue could surge to approximately $120 billion by 2027, driven by these expanding partnerships and custom chip pipelines.

This accelerating hardware momentum underscores Broadcom's position as a dominant force challenging other major players in the AI chip market. While the company operates a highly profitable infrastructure software segment following its VMware acquisition, its semiconductor division remains the primary growth engine, historically representing 61% of total sales in recent quarters. By co-developing industry-leading silicon directly with companies like OpenAI, Broadcom is scaling the physical infrastructure required to support massive AI data centers. As enterprises continue to adopt custom AI accelerators to train and inference LLMs, Broadcom is strategically positioned to capitalize on the surging global demand for efficient, scalable compute power.
