Renesas Acquires Pictorus to Accelerate Embedded System Development Strategy
A subsidiary of Renesas Electronics has completed the acquisition of Pictorus, a software developer based in Oakland, California. Through this acquisition, Renesas incorporates a cloud-based behavioral modeling platform designed to accelerate embedded system development. This shifts the engineering experience away from fragmented point tools toward a cohesive, connected platform for model-based system design.
The technology will be integrated into Renesas 365, a newly released platform that unifies the entire electronics system development process, from initial discovery through development and lifecycle management. This integration enables engineers to visually design, express, and simulate system behavior and intent, which significantly accelerates the application development cycle. As a cloud-native solution, the platform ensures a continuous digital thread from system modeling to software implementation and final device deployment.
Pictorus simplifies the development workflow by allowing engineers to design system behavior visually through block diagrams in a web browser. This approach eliminates the necessity for manual coding, as the platform automatically converts these diagrams into real, executable embedded software. The generated code is written in memory-safe Rust and offers interoperability with C/C++ and Python. These rapid virtual prototyping and code generation capabilities are particularly advantageous for the automotive, robotics, and industrial equipment sectors, where software-defined solutions require fast early-stage validation.
This acquisition aligns with Renesas's broader Digitalization Vision, which aims to make electronics design more accessible to the wider market in collaboration with Altium. By combining current architectural modeling capabilities with Pictorus's behavioral modeling and simulation, Renesas facilitates a "left shift" in system design. This enables faster exploration and evaluation, ensuring optimal device selections while bridging the gaps between hardware, software, simulation, and deployment.
