SK Hynix's Solidigm unit is weighing NAND memory chip factory in US.

Solidigm, the US-based subsidiary of South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix, is evaluating plans to construct a new NAND flash memory manufacturing facility within the United States. Industry sources indicate that upstate New York has emerged as a leading candidate for the potential site. If realized, this expansion would represent Solidigm's first NAND fabrication plant located on American soil, marking a major strategic shift in its global production footprint. The potential facility aims to address global supply chain constraints and meet the escalating storage demands of modern computing.

The proposed US expansion is heavily driven by shifting geopolitical dynamics and supply chain vulnerabilities. Currently, Solidigm relies on a single major NAND production site located in Dalian, China. By establishing a domestic American factory, the company intends to reduce its operational dependence on Chinese manufacturing and limit its exposure to potential US tariffs. Furthermore, the move aligns with increasing pressure from Washington on foreign semiconductor companies to localize their supply chains and navigate tightening restrictions on chipmaking equipment exports to China.

While opening a semiconductor plant in the United States introduces higher operational and production costs compared to manufacturing in South Korea, the strategic benefits are substantial. A localized supply chain provides Solidigm with tariff protection and direct proximity to highly lucrative American enterprise customers. This is particularly critical for Solidigm, as the division specializes in producing high-capacity enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs) designed specifically to handle the massive storage requirements of artificial intelligence data centers.

These manufacturing expansion talks are occurring alongside broader financial strategies to capitalize on Solidigm's rapid growth. Recent reports suggest that the subsidiary is concurrently weighing an initial public offering (IPO) that could value the business at up to $150 billion. Although SK Hynix has stated that no specific expansion or IPO plans have been officially confirmed at this time, an IPO of this magnitude would provide a standalone valuation and capital to strengthen Solidigm's technological competitiveness in the booming AI storage market.
